Adam+Eve

In the first part of In Cold Blood, biblical references are made by Capote in order to foreshadow the happenings of a murder further on in the novel.  A biblical reference used is the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, this story shows the fall of trust, which is reflected in In Cold Blood as well. In the popular story of Adam and Eve, they trust the snake enough to bite the apple and then they lose trust and realize themselves as nude. In In cold Blood, the citizens of Holcomb trust each other and therefore never lock their doors thinking themselves as safe. After they are murdered, which would be compared to the eating of the apple, the community realizes themselves as not being safe and therefore having the obligation of locking their doors. Throughout the story there are also different times of hinting back to the story of Adam and Eve, including the snake on Perry’s arm, the constant apple eating habit of Mr. Clutter, as well as Mr. Clutters tree ranch. These three are mentioned throughout the first part of the novel and foreshadow the ending of the story.
