In, In Cold Blood, Perry describes Willie-Jay as an all around better friend than Dick is, and this is why throughout the book, Perry loses respect for his partner. After perry described a dream that meant a lot to him dick says, So? The snake swallows you? Or what?" This quote shows that Perry shared a meaningful thing to Dick, and Dick responded with a cruel and insensitive response, and this causes Perry to feel bad, which is not what a friend is supposed to do. Although, when he tells Willie-Jay about his dream, Willie-jay responds with a supportive answer, a thing that a friend is supposed to do. The book states, "He'd once told it to his friend Willie-Jay; he had decsribed to him the towering bird, the yellow sort of parrot. Of course. Willie-Jay was different-delicate minded, a saint. He'd understood. But Dick? Dick might laugh. And that Perry could not abide." this quote shows the different responses between Dick and Willie-Jay. Dick showed an insensitive response, almost making fun of Perry for telling him the dream. But Willie-Jay provided a "delicate minded" response. The differences of these responses are significant because Dick's response gave the idea that Dick wasn't his friend but Willie-jay's response gave the idea he was his friend. And the fact that Dick gives a cruel response, ultimately makes perry lose respect for Dick.
